schools...rise up

identify

As a teacher or other school employee you interact with many different young people each day. Here are a few ideas to consider when identifying youth you might impact:

  • youth who attend your school
  • visiting students (at sporting events, exchange programs, prom, and other extracurricular activities)

commit

After you identify the youth you interact with regularly, make a commitment to invest your time with them. Here are some examples on how to make that investment:

  • pursue additional "duties" that place you with youth (student council advisor, class advisor, sports coach, chaperone, etc.)
  • commit to spend time with your students outside of the traditional classroom (during lunch, before or after school)
  • commit to spend time with your students during their activities (sporting events, band/choir concerts, plays, etc.)
  • get to know the issues that these students are dealing with
  • educate yourself about these issues and where you can direct students who are struggling or have questions you can't answer

engage

Grow your relationship and develop a connection with identified youth. Intentionally have conversations with them about issues that impact their life. Here are some ideas to spark these conversations:

  • participate in conversations with students before, during and after school
  • be present at their activities and let them know you were there by discussing the activity with them
  • get to know their passions, goals and struggles
  • when issues or problems arise, talk to the student about them...find out how it is affecting them, and make sure they know their issues are important to you
